Voice
Sustainable technique, breath, resonance and expressive freedom, crafted around each singer’s unique vocal personality.
Baritone · teacher · mentor
Samuel Dundas is an acclaimed Australian baritone, experienced voice teacher and artist mentor who brings nearly two decades of professional stage experience into every session.
His work combines rigorous vocal craft with a deep understanding of performance, creative identity and the person behind the artist.
Professional experience
Leading roles with Opera Australia, every Australian state opera company and New Zealand Opera, alongside appearances with Australia’s major symphony orchestras and choral organisations.
On the stage
Samuel began his professional development with Victorian Opera’s Artist Development Program before joining Opera Australia’s Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Program. Since then, he has built a substantial career across opera, concert and contemporary performance.
His repertoire spans the title roles in Galileo and Voss, Cave in Eucalyptus, Wolfram in Tannhäuser, Horatio in Hamlet, Marcello in La bohème, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor and Sharpless in Madama Butterfly. He has worked with leading conductors, directors, orchestras and creative teams throughout Australia and New Zealand.
His career has given Samuel first-hand knowledge of what performance demands: technical consistency, character, collaboration, stamina, adaptability and the ability to remain connected under pressure.
Teaching & mentoring
Sustainable technique, breath, resonance and expressive freedom, crafted around each singer’s unique vocal personality.
Character, stagecraft, preparation and practical strategies for meeting pressure without losing spontaneity.
Creative identity, healthy motivation and the resilient working habits needed to build a sustainable artistic life.
Samuel has taught and coached developing performers in tertiary settings including the University of Tasmania and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), as well as through private teaching and artist mentoring.
His students benefit from advice that is technically informed, professionally relevant and responsive to the individual. The goal is not to manufacture one kind of sound or performer, but to help each person develop a voice, process and presence that feel authentically their own.
Creative wellbeing
Samuel’s interest in wellbeing grew from both personal experience and years of listening to students. Singing lessons often became places where people felt able to speak openly; the shared language of music created trust, confidence and connection.
This insight led to postgraduate study in counselling and the creation of Samuel Dundas Creative Wellbeing—a studio where high-level artistic practice and human wellbeing are held with equal care.
Samuel currently offers singing tuition, artist mentoring and wellbeing coaching. These are educational and supportive services, not counselling or mental-health treatment.
